Talent Training

The development of discipline of Material Science and Engineering (MSE) of SUSTC is in combination with frontier science, national strategy development planning and local enterprises. Based on developing metallic materials, ceramics materials, polymeric materials and other conventional discipline, MSE promotes fields of interdisciplinary research, and focuses on new energy materials, environmental friendly materials and other fields closely related to livelihood and sustainable development, as well as research new prosperous materials like organic and inorganic photoelectric materials, biomedical and biomimetic materials, special functional materials, intelligent materials and modern material processing and forming materials such as micro-nanometer processing, powder metallurgy and 3D printing etc. While focusing on application-based research closely related to economic and social development, MSE develops fundamental research correlating  to material composition-structure- performance by proposing new concept, exploring new principles and discovering new effects, thus greatly develop new material characterization techniques and testing methods to reinforce material science theories. The research is conformity with discipline development, and in line with the guiding thought of combining the national key scientific research and engineering programs, combining innovative platform and innovative base, and combining featuring disciplines and emerging inter-discipline.

The discipline has preliminarily established a high-level faculty. There are 23 full-time tenure professors, including 3 scholars of “Thousand Talents Program”, 6 professors of “Thousand Youth Talents Plan”, 1 professor of “Outstanding Youths’ and 14 professors honored the overseas high-level talents (the “Peacock Program” ) in Shenzhen. In the following 5 years we aim to develop a faculty team composed of 40 tenure professors including approximately 10% foreign scholars to achieve international education MSE professors have experience in training postgraduates in overseas famous universities or research institutes,  and training innovative talents, and are capable of teaching in English.

Greatly supported by Shenzhen Government and the University,  MSE has established a public scientific research center and 10 laboratories in different fields. Until now large instruments and equipmentwith value of almost 60 million yuan have been equipped. Besides, university-level public scientific research center of SUSTC, including ultra-cleanness room covering an area of 1200 square meters, and material characterization and micro-nano processing equipment with value of over 120 million yuan provides the international top teaching and scientific research for the discipline development.

In the past 5 years, the disciplinehas published total 200 papers, including 50 papers signed by SUSTC; 11 patents signed by SUSTC, including 5 PCT patents; the discipline has received  16  grants  with total amount of 9.17 million yuan, including 4 National Natural Fund Projects, 1 program by the Ministry of Education, 1 program funded by Guangdong Province Natural Foundation and 11 programs funded by Shenzhen Government.

The discipline will be based on various advanced materials andpositioned at the advanced materials and engineering to be developed in Shenzhen and even China, and proficiency shall be world-class; all faculties with experience for many years in overseas famous universities or research institutes for training (doctoral) postgraduate and familiarizing international frontier experience of related technology are used to develop research-based and innovative high-level talents urgently needed by China advantageous in morality, physical conditions and intelligence with discipline features and advantages; by closely combining science and research, the trained postgraduates can serve society better, provide service and contribute to development of Shenzhen and China.

Introduction of disciplines of the Department       

The major of material science and engineering is a discipline based on material science, chemistry and physics, systematically learning fundamental theory and experiment skill of material science and engineering and applying them to synthesizing, preparing, structure, performance and application of materials. The discipline is the outcome of combination of multiple disciplines, and is a kind of application science closely related to engineering technology. Materials are material basis for human’s survival and development. In the 1970s, human beings took information, material and energy as pillars of social civilization. In the 1980s, with emerging of hi-tech cluster, new material and information technology, and biology technology are used as marks of new technology revolution. In modern society, materials are a key composition of national economic building, national defense and people’s life.

 

Professional training objective

The major trains compound high-quality science and technology talents with firm theory knowledge of material science and engineering, mastering frontier material R& D and characterization technology, with applied technology of English and computer and engaging in hi-tech material R& D and interdisciplinary work. The trained students are capable of researching the discipline and related fields, new material design and development, teaching and management, and have relatively powerful innovation awareness, team cooperation and leading capability. The graduates can engage in conventional material industrial production in the discipline, engage in design and research of new materials, new process and technology, can continue postgraduate study of material science and engineering, hi-tech discipline and inter-disciplines, and serve scientific research, development, teaching and management of enterprises, scientific research, college and government bodies.

Main practical teaching includes: experiment class, industrial practice (summer holiday in Grade 3), workshop visiting and practice, undergraduates’ innovation experiment (starting from Grade 2, undergraduates with excellent score can  persue their scientific research under guidance of their supervisors, including summer holiday), and various academic and overseas undergraduate competitions, such as ASM International Metallographic Contest.
